Professor Orlando Rojas from Aalto University, Helsinki (Finland) and UBC, Vancouver (Canada) will give a talk about "Interfacial Assembly and structuring of renewable nanoparticles for advanced materials".

Biological systems use structured, hierarchical and nano-scaled building blocks to develop multiple functions. They are best exemplified by rod-like, chiral particles such as cellulose and chitin nanocrystals, which display thermo-mechanical and optical properties that are central to the field of biomimicry. Together with nanolignins and other materials produced from renewable resources, such particles are being explored as possible solutions to the future material demands. The interfacial assembly and structuring in water, the natural biosynthesis medium, dictate the opportunity for any potential utilization. This talk summarizes our experience in this area, considering fundamental aspects such as the interactions and the self- and directed assembly at solid/liquid, liquid/liquid and gas/liquid interfaces. Recognizing the importance of these aspects, several examples of advanced materials produced from cellulose, lignin and chitin will be introduced, including those with bioactivity, stimuli-responsiveness and capabilities for energy harvesting.


Professor Orlando Rojas is chair of the Materials Platform of Aalto University, Finland, where he holds double affiliation with the departments of Bioproducts and Biosystems and Applied Physics. He is the recipient of the 2018 Anselme Payen Award, one of the highest recognitions in the area of cellulose and renewable materials. He is elected Fellow of the American Chemical Society, the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters and is the recipient of the 2015 Tappi Nanotechnology Award. He is co-PI of the Academy of Finland's Center of Excellence in Molecular Engineering of Biosynthetic Hybrid Materials Research, HYBER (2014-2019). His most recent research grants includes the prestigious European Research Commission Advanced Grant (ERC-Advanced) and the Academy of Finland Materials Bioeconomy Flagship. He has published over 330 peer-reviewed papers related to the core research of his group, “Bio-based Colloids and Materials”, which mainly deals with nanostructures from renewable materials and their utilization in multiphase systems.
