Galactolipids in thylakoid membranes: Why galactose?

Koichiro Awai from Shizuoka University, Japan

Thylakoid membranes are the place for photosynthesis and 80 mol% of their membrane lipids are occupied by galactolipids, monogalactosyldiacylglycerol and digalactosyldiacylglycerol. Why galactose? To answer this question, we are using cyanobacteria as a model system. Our recent progress on the research for significance of galactolipids in the photosynthetic membranes will be presented.
