Title : Searching for bioactive compounds against parasites and viral diseases

The discovery of New Chemical Entities (NEC) with biological applications has been a promising path for synthetic organic chemists. Recently, we have been exploring the construction of carbohydrate-based small molecule derivatives bearing 1,4-naphthoquinone and azo-heterocycles moieties, which were synthesized using  a diversity of protocols. This portfolio of compounds was then evaluated against several diseases, such as tuberculosis, malaria, leishmania, and viruses (Arbovirus, SARS-CoV-2). These results indicate a few of leading candidates for future clinical trials.

Title : Modifying Glucosinolates what for?

Glucosinolates are sulfur-containing secondary metabolites whose structure is based on a β-D-glucopyranose unit linked through an O-sulfated (Z)-thiohydroximate function to a variable aglycon. They are part of the defence mechanism of cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, mustard, and wasabi. Myrosinase, a specific β-thioglucohydrolase, hydrolizes the anomeric C-S bond, leading to the formation of isothiocyanate species (ITC). This hydrolysis allows the shift from stable non-toxic and water-soluble precursors to a toxic, highly reactive, difficult to prepare and store in most cases, water-insoluble function. This unique system can be diverted as a bioconjugation tool, to detect myrosinase and applied to other glycosidase .
