In this talk, I will present our research on glycomimetics that are synthetic molecules designed to mimic the structure and biological functions of carbohydrates. We explore how these carbohydrate-inspired compounds can be developed as tools to investigate and modulate carbohydrate-protein interactions in the context of infectious diseases. The presentation will highlight how molecular modification of carbohydrate structures can overcome limitations of natural sugars and lead to new therapeutic strategies targeting carbohydrate-mediated processes, with a focus on the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. I will further give an outlook into our synthetic sialomimetic microarray platform that is exploited for identifying human siglec binders and inhibitors of viruses with pandemic potential.
