Conference : Synthesis of oligosaccharide-containing block copolymers: From search for ultrafine nanostructures to biobased polymer applications
Prof. Takuya ISONO, Faculty of Engineering, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan
Carbohydrates, encompassing monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides, have long been acknowledged as a crucial class of raw materials due to their natural abundance and renewable availability. Moreover, naturally occurring carbohydrates exhibit intriguing properties, such as strong hydrophilicity, crystallization ability, optical activity, and biological activity, making them attractive building blocks for constructing novel functional materials. Through collaboration with CERMAV, I have been involved in synthesizing novel block copolymers (sugar-BCPs) by conjugating oligosaccharides with various hydrophobic polymers. The objective is not only to gain fundamental insight into the nanostructure formation in sugar-BCPs but also to create biobased polymeric materials like elastomers.
